A Leadership Responsibility - Managing Stress

Published on 8 August 2024 at 17:11

During my time as the Unit Welfare Officer at 3 RANGER, I realised the impact that stress and anxiety can have not just on the individual, but also on their families and the entire organisation. From home life to relationships and work, we are surrounded by friction points that cause stress and anxiety. The role of leadership in managing stress within the workplace is more crucial than ever. As part of the LION Culture Leadership and Management training courses, tangible strategies and techniques have been developed to help leaders effectively address and mitigate stress among their teams. Here are some top tips:

Leadership Responsibility

  • Setting the Tone. Leaders play an important role in setting the tone for their teams. By demonstrating a calm and collected manner, leaders can influence how employees perceive and respond to stressful situations.
  • Creating a Supportive Environment. It is essential for leaders to create a supportive and open environment where employees feel comfortable discussing their stressors. Encouraging open communication can help in identifying and addressing issues early on.
  • Promoting Work-Life Balance. Leaders should prioritise and promote work-life balance to prevent burnout and excessive stress among team members. Encouraging breaks, vacations, and flexible work arrangements can contribute to a healthier working environment.
  • Leading by Example. Leaders who practice self-care and stress management techniques themselves set a positive example for their teams. Demonstrating healthy coping mechanisms can inspire employees to prioritise their well-being as well.

LION Culture Strategies

  • Mindfulness Practices: Incorporating mindfulness techniques into daily routines can help employees stay focused, reduce anxiety, and improve overall well-being.
  • Time Management Skills: Effective time management can significantly reduce stress levels. Providing training and tools to enhance time management skills can benefit both individuals and the organisation as a whole.
  • Effective Communication. Improving communication skills through workshops and training sessions can enhance team dynamics, reduce misunderstandings, and ease workplace stress.
  • Wellness Activity. Implementing wellness programs that focus on physical activity, nutrition, and mental health can promote a healthier lifestyle and support stress management efforts.

Being a great leader isn’t solely about achieving results; it also involves caring for people and ensuring their well-being. Managing workplace stress is a core responsibility of leadership that has a direct impact on employees’ performance and organisational success. By proactively addressing stress and implementing effective strategies, leaders can create a positive working environment where employees feel supported, motivated, and empowered. As part of the LION Culture Leadership & Management training courses, leaders gain access to practical tools and techniques to seamlessly integrate stress management into the daily working practices.
