Introduction

LION Culture CIC is committed to safeguarding the welfare of all children and young people involved in our programs and activities. This policy provides a clear framework for how our staff and volunteers protect children from abuse and harm. It outlines procedures and responsibilities to promote the safety, security, and well-being of every child we work with.

Policy Objectives
We aim to:
Safety: Ensure children and young people feel secure in our care.
Empowerment: Equip children with the knowledge and confidence to raise concerns or seek help.
Prevention: Implement proactive measures that reduce risks of abuse or neglect.
Responsiveness: Establish clear processes for reporting and responding to concerns.
Training: Provide regular safeguarding training for all staff and volunteers.
Partnerships: Collaborate with relevant statutory agencies to support child welfare.

Key Definitions

Safeguarding
: Actions taken to promote the welfare of children and protect them from harm.
Child: Any individual under the age of 18.
Abuse: Any act that causes or risks causing harm to a child. Abuse may include:
Physical Abuse: Acts such as hitting, shaking, or physically harming a child.
Emotional Abuse: Ongoing emotional mistreatment that damages a child’s development.
Sexual Abuse: Involvement of a child in sexual activity they cannot understand or consent to.
Neglect: Failure to meet a child’s basic physical or emotional needs.

Legal Framework
This policy aligns with key UK legislation and guidance, including:
Children Act 1989 and 2004

Safeguarding Procedures

Recognising Signs of Abuse
Staff and volunteers should be aware of common indicators:
Physical: Unexplained bruises or injuries, malnutrition, or poor hygiene
Behavioural: Sudden withdrawal, fear, or changes in behavior
Sexual: Inappropriate knowledge or behaviour for the child’s age
Neglect: Unmet medical needs, lack of clothing, or frequent absences

Reporting Concerns

Immediate Risk
If a child is in immediate danger, call 999 and remove the child from harm if safe to do so.

Internal Reporting
Report concerns to the DSL within 24 hours using the safeguarding concern form. Include:Detailed description of the issueContext and any actions already takenNames of involved individuals or witnesses

Confidentiality
Information is shared only on a "need-to-know" basis to protect the child. Do not discuss the concern with others unless authorised.

Responding to Concerns
The DSL will:Investigate reports promptly and sensitivelyMaintain secure documentationRefer to external agencies (e.g. social services) when necessaryPrioritise the child’s welfare in all decisions

Allegations Against Staff or VolunteersReporting Allegations
Any staff or volunteer must report allegations against themselves or others immediately to the DSL.
If the DSL is involved, report directly to a Board member.
Document the allegation promptly, noting dates, times, individuals, and specific statements.

Confidentiality
Maintain strict confidentiality throughout the process. Only those involved in the investigation should have access to the information.

Investigation Process
An independent and impartial investigation will be initiated.Relevant authorities (e.g., child protection services) will be informed where appropriate.
Protective measures, such as suspending the accused, may be enacted during the investigation.Communication will remain professional and respectful throughout.

Support for the Alleged Victim

Emotional support
such as counselling will be offered to the child.
Maintain open communication with the child and guardians.
Provide referrals to external child welfare specialists when necessary.
Adjust the child’s environment to ensure ongoing safety.

Post-Investigation OutcomesConduct a review to evaluate the investigation and outcomes.Implement disciplinary action if necessary:Warnings, Mandatory training or supervision, Suspension or permanent dismissal, Report serious findings to regulatory bodies and child protection services where applicable.

Debrief and Feedback
Hold debriefing sessions with key staff to identify any gaps in safeguarding practice.Use findings to improve future procedures and strengthen organisational safeguarding culture.

Safeguarding Training

Working with Other Agencies
LION Culture CIC collaborates closely with local safeguarding boards, social services, and police. The DSL participates in multi-agency meetings and training to ensure coordinated responses and up-to-date knowledge of safeguarding protocols.

We follow safer recruitment practices to protect children: All applicants complete a safeguarding declaration

Policy Review and MonitoringThis policy will be reviewed annually or sooner if needed due to an incident or legislative changes. The DSL will collect feedback from stakeholders and monitor compliance through periodic audits and reporting to the Board.
